2023

Festive Greetings

Taken from a footpath looking towards the driveway at Southlands in Tandridge – the perfect place to work and live from.

As the year comes to a close I always stop for a moment to reflect on the past 12 months and what it means to me.

At the top of my list is gratitude to my customers for allowing me to photograph them, their families, the things they love, and their marketing needs. Without you, I would not have my business that has been up and running since 1997.

It’s with the support and input from the other people I work with – the fine art and photographic printers, post-production and IT experts, bookbinders, designers, accountants, and the Association of Photographers who collectively help me keep all the behind-the-scenes part of my business running smoothly.

A very big festive THANK YOU!

Wishing you all a fun time and happy Christmas and a prosperous and healthy 2024.

Looking forward to doing more of what I love for years to come.. thank you very much.

In Collaboration with R & R Detailing - Bespoke Car Care

A selection of my limited edition photographs adorn the walls of the workplace.

Tucked away in a tranquil setting in rural Kent, you’ll find R & R Detailing - Bespoke Car Care… but not any old car care – this is ‘Rest and Relaxation’ for your cars – cars you cherish and deserve the very best. Especially in preparation for a photoshoot with me to create provenance and a visual lasting memory.

Meet Rob Barnard, owner of R & R Detailing, a certified and accredited company by leading brands in the industry. He really does have a passion for reviving and restoring your automobiles and motorcycles. I had the pleasure of spending some time with him to learn more about the bespoke service he offers with fellow petrolhead Pete.

Rob takes the time to understand just what you want to achieve, your options include detailing, ceramic coatings, paint protection film, vinyl wraps, and graphics and number plates.

Rob said once you have had a coating on your car, it comes with a warranty, which means DO NOT WASH your car. Available to buy is a range of specialist products to protect and maintain.

Rob says…

“We are not just your generic Detailing & PPF studio,  I have also wanted to completely understand what our clients want to achieve and build them a treatment package. I think it’s the most important part to make a successful and understanding relationship so we can work together.  I want to relax them and then get them excited about projects.

There are so many “DETAILING” outfits now I want to separate myself from that and be different.

I’m constantly thinking about project ideas and different business plans, I can’t switch off. But I think passion is what people need to see”.

Rob continues…

“I’ve tried so many different products over the last 10 years but GYEON is always a favourite, I’ve been accredited/ certified since 2014 and love the quality of the product from maintenance to certified ceramic coatings & PPF (paint protection film).

We offer a range of detailing packages. Each package is bespoke to your car and is built in collaboration with you.

Option 1 offers a regular safe wash package.

Option 2 consists of a more in-depth decontamination wash.

Option 3 progresses with paint correction –f or this option, we offer a range of treatments varying from a single-stage paint correction to a full multi-stage paint correction. The skill of machine polishing is used to remove defects and scratches from the paintwork, boosting gloss levels and revealing any metallic clarity”

Ceramic Coatings

Our certified Ceramic Coatings are applied by highly skilled detailers to all car surfaces, guaranteeing outstanding visual results, long-lasting protection, and resistance to dirt and contaminates. Regular safe washes become more effective and the surfaces remain glossy, now protected from UV rays and harsh chemicals preventing oxidation and dullness.

PPF

Whether you have fresh paintwork from our bespoke package or the original factory paint, protection is a must to keep your car safe from scratches, chips and harsh dealings of modern life. PPF is the perfect solution to protect the fresh paintwork on all surfaces of your vehicle.

Vinyl and Graphics ( complete colour changes)

We design and replicate OEM decals and custom create graphics. We offer full vinyl colour changes, de-chroming, and window tinting.

We are collaborating with Stella to ensure your cars are in tip-top condition for their photoshoot to create provenance and a visual memory”.

“We always want to be Sustainable – all waste is recycled and our microbes even have a tire system, when new they are safe for freshly polished paintwork, washed & dried they are moved to interior cleans then washed & dried, and they will do arches and engine bays then rewashed to clean the floors,  after that a mechanic friend takes them away” .

Number Plates

R & R Detailing offers a range of different styles from standard to 3D gels, 4D, tinted, short, hex, ghost.

Secure Storage

They offer a safe, secure and discreet vehicle storage facility providing a home for classic, luxury, track, and performance vehicles including camper vans.

Whether for a short stay or for the long term, each vehicle is monitored 24 hours a day with security coverage and the facility is kept secure with high grade physical locks and bollards.
Each vehicle is provided with a dedicated  C-TEK battery conditioner and will receive a bi-weekly run up to temperature to ensure optimum battery level is maintained. Each vehicle is provided with a super soft, stretchy, breathable cover that is suitable for all paint types. Covers are carefully and methodically applied and removed to minimise any contamination. Each aspect of the storage process is carried out by a dedicated, passionate and experienced member of the Supremacy team.
Storage solutions at Supremacy are tailor-made around customer’s requirements and they are happy to discuss your specifications.

The Ghost number plate with raised letters and either black or grey recessed within.

Thanks for taking the time to read about our collaboration, this link takes you to the R & Detailing website and this link takes you to the Identity page of my website for commissions to photograph your prized automobile.

Last but not least this link is to my shop if you’d like to purchase a limited edition photograph. With Christmas just around the corner, you might just find something for the car lover in your life!

A Collaboration with Dylan Miles – Purveyors of Rare Automobiles and Motorcycles

Purveyors of Rare Automobiles and Motorcycles in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

In a prominent position in Royal Tunbridge Wells you’ll find a magnificent car showroom – but not any car showroom, this one is a purveyor of rare automobiles and motorcycles called Dylan Miles.

It’s my absolute pleasure to tell you so much more….

I met up with Dylan and his team on 11th September 2023 when he arrived back from an action packed weekend at the Goodwood Revival on a hot and sunny day.

Dylan is no stranger to cars and motorcycles they have been a major part of his life since he was born. His father, Simon dedicated his life to restoring rare Brough Superiors (a high-performance motorcycle designed for speed and luxury). However, It was his father’s Aston Martin DB5 Convertible and a Ferrari Daytona that really captured his interest and his fascination to pursue a career in his lifelong passion.

I first met Dylan Miles back in 2017 when he worked at JD Classics in Mayfair, our paths crossed a few times after at various automotive events, including at Salon Privé where I was photographing the event and he had just launched Dylan Miles Ltd and was exhibiting his collection of cars for sale.

A luxurious showroom beautifully designed with attention to detail to house some of the most sought after automobiles and motorcycles.

An inspiring collection of automotive artworks adorn the walls. Including two of my limited edition photographs seen at the top of this photograph of a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe from a private collection – these Artist Proofs are available for purchase.

My collaboration with Dylan Miles combines our shared passion for the design and detail of fine automobiles and motorcycles to give first-class personal customer service and an experience to enjoy.

As well as photographing people, I love photographing their personal collections of classic & supercars and motorcycles to create provenance and visual memory for wall art and tailor-made coffee table books – unique to each recipient. Each automobile is photographed in locations meaningful to the owner to reflect their lifestyle. This link tells you more.

Take a further look inside the Dylan Miles showroom via the images below. The Camaro on the forecourt is a fully restored 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 in its original colour of Rallye Green.

Below photograph of Dylan Miles centre, with Showroom Manager Matt Landers, left, and Josh Holmes, Showroom Assistant right.

More about Dylan and the history of the showroom…

Dylan says:

I’ve worked with some great companies, including RM Sotheby’s, Fiskens, Autosport Designs in New York, and JD Classics. Lots of people joked about how many different jobs I’ve had in the motor trade, but then there’s method to my madness because I’ve forged very good relationships with a lot of significant and influential people, from whom I’ve learned a lot. And today, everyone who I’ve worked with in the past I’m still doing regular business with, so it’s paying dividends.

The history of the showroom:

Transformed over nine months an extensive restoration programe was undertaken and opened in January 2023.

A building with strong automotive links. Directly next door at number 11 London Road stood a respected Victorian carriage company that constructed lavish horse-drawn carriages called AA Cundell. In 1907 the site was taken over by J. Rawsons and Sons who held the concession for Austin, Daimler, Essex and other British marques. In 1909 the showrooms 12-16 London Road were erected directly next door at the request of Mr. G Stevenson, who, at the time was director of Rawsons. He established G. Stevenson Engineers – The Kent and Sussex Garage Ltd and offered both sales and maintenance, becoming a concession for Humber, Wolseley and many other marques of the day. The building remained occupied by Stevensons well into the 1960s who by then were a franchised dealer for Standard Triumph.

By the late 1970s, the building was taken over by Pace Petroleum, acting as a petrol station, and later became home to a local Suzuki dealership. For the past few years the building was taken over by Westminster Outdoor Living until Dylan Miles acquired it in April 2022. The rest, as they say, is history! Well done to Dylan for restoring the building – a tremendous asset to London Road and Royal Tunbridge Wells.

The building has to be one of the last remaining working showrooms that exists worldwide today. Dylan’s empathy and a nod to a bygone era are evident for all to see. Viewings at the showroom are by appointment.

Watch this space for further updates on collaborations with Dylan Miles.

If you or someone you know has a classic & supercar collection worthy of a photo shoot I’d love to hear from you, simply call me on 0777 181 0105 or email me.

You can contact the friendly team at Dylan Miles via their website here.

A Snapshot Of My Family Time

We have come to the end of July 2023 and the schools have broken up for the summer having completed another academic year. It gives us time to rest and recuperate and reflect on time gone by and plan what’s to come.

I’m taking the time to stop and focus on the importance of the photograph. Where would we be without photographs to tell us the stories of our and others' lives? Think about how one-dimensional our world would be without the printed photograph.

I just love looking back at old photographs of anything and the stories they have to tell us. It’s the generations and throwbacks of family likeness that fascinate me. Have you ever seen a family photo taken decades ago that reminds you of a sibling or living relative?

It fills me with fascination and curiosity when I look back at my family photographs and inspires me to continue to capture and craft new photos too. This is why I’m choosing to share some of my own family photos taken of my daughter, granddaughter, and future son-in-law. The photoshoot was done whilst we were holidaying in Cyprus in May visiting our amazing relatives.

I took the opportunity to photograph my granddaughter with her mummy and daddy in the village where my parents were born to continue the story of our lives.
The moral of this story is the reason why I love my ‘work’ so much – because it's connecting with people, documenting fleeting moments to reflect on for many, many years to come – after all this is all we have with the passing of time.

Feel free to get in touch to create your visual memories. It doesn’t have to be of your family and friends. It could be of a prized collection, home, or garden, or where ever your imagination takes you.

These photographs are a small snapshot of my life…to be continued!

My granddaughter and me

A new family beginning!

Thanks

Stella

S4K International Films at Southlands in Tandridge, Oxted

Southlands a beautiful Grade II listed building nestled in eight acres of grounds with far reaching views

Let me tell you more about where I’m based... it’s a place called Southlands – a beautiful Grade II listed building in the Surrey countryside. It’s nestled in eight acres of stunning grounds surrounded by woodlands and fields and dates back to 1827. The far reaching views from my first-floor apartment are captivating with views overlooking the Weald.

This gives me the perfect tranquil working environment and location for photoshoots. I feel inspired every single day. With this in mind, Southlands will soon be available to others to hire for commercial photographic shoots and filming too.

Last week a local theatrical company called Shakespeare 4 Kidz - S4K International asked permission to film a pilot for a new film they are producing called ‘Side-by-side by Shakespeare’ – shooting a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – our neighbouring woodland proving to be ideal to set the scene.

So here begins our Southlands Production journey, to offer our grounds for commercial films, period dramas, commercials and photoshoots.

Read on to learn more about S4K International and our day with Titania and Oberon …

The Shakespeare 4 Kidz project started in the mid-nineties when friends Julian Chenery and Matt Gimblett combined to create musical theatre adaptations of Shakespeare’s classic stories to be performed as school shows. Since then the company has expanded into publishing, education and theatre production - with their shows being performed by professional adult casts in theatres all over the country. The shows have also been performed by schools in every English-speaking country in the world.

S4K International’s “Side-by-side…” project is a series of short films that directly compare the Shakespeare 4 Kidz easy-to-understand/accessible musical versions of a scene with the original text one. Both scenes are identical: same scene, same actors, same shots, same edits, same music. The idea is to make them available literally side-by-side.

Set up and ready for a day filming

The famous scene from the comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the audience’s first introduction to Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of Fairyland, and finds them in a heated argument over the custody of a young orphaned prince from India. Oberon wants him to join his gang but Titania has made a vow to the boy’s mother that she would bring him up and protect him. Their argument has disrupted the climate and the seasons of the mortal world.

The actors were Andrew Troy (Oberon) and Thea Jo Wolfe (Titania). Directed by Olivia Chenery.

The Indian Prince, the subject of the King and Queen of Fairyland’s nature-disrupting argument, is a young actor called Kenneth from the Helen O’Grady Academy in Coulsdon.

The series is produced by Carolyn and Julian Chenery for S4K International and the first two episodes will be launched in the autumn of 2023. Film production is by Chris Grierson and Alex Carter of The Sheriff of London.

Makeup by Helena Sergeant. Lunch made by The Limpsfield Cookery School. Costumes by Prangsta Costumiers.

For more information on S4K’s work visit S4Kinternational.com and Shakespeare4Kidz.com - or search ‘S4K International’ across social media channels.

An exchange of stares and words from Oberon and Titania.

A very productive and successful day was had by all. Thank you to Barry our neighbour for being so accommodating with the use of his wonderful woodland and driveway.

It's Time For Your Photoshoot Amongst the Bluebells

WOW, they certainly know how to pack a punch and Mother Nature has done it again and filled our local woodlands with the most amazing display of bluebells and a lingering and captivating scent to entice us there.

Yes! it’s time to confirm your family photoshoot so I can capture a perfect moment in time!

I’m showcasing the first bluebell shoot this year taken today, Wednesday 19 April on a glorious spring morning.

After many years photographing your families this shoot was an extra special one for me because for the first time ever I get to photograph my daughter Nicola with her daughter Bella who is 7 months old amongst the bluebells!

A special moment in time that I get to treasure forever, as well as Bella’s mummy and daddy and our extended family too!

Now is the time to allow me to capture your family, but you’ll have to hurry because Mother Nature waits for no one! There is only a tiny window of opportunity before these protected wildflowers fade until next year.

PREMIUM PHOTOGRAPHY - BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED

International Women's Day 8th March

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8th to honor the achievements of women around the world and is a national holiday in many countries.

The day has its roots in the labor movement of the early 1900s when women began organising to fight for improved working conditions and the right to vote. The first official International Women's Day celebration was held on February 28, 1909 in New York City. The Socialist Party of America declared it a national event and more than 15,000 women attended rallies in the city.

In 1910, a second International Women's Day was held in Copenhagen and was attended by women from 17 countries. At the conference, they created the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, which fought for the right of women to vote. Since then, International Women's Day has grown to become a global event, with millions of people around the world taking part.

So hats off to all of us women out there in celebration of our strength and independence to fight for our rights and visibility in society.

I have photographed hundreds of women and girls over the years, too many to add to this post. But I’d like to add just one – it’s of my daughter and her baby daughter – symbolising the unique and hardest job in the world, a Mother, certainly something to applaud today on International Women’s Day.

Thanks

Stella

Springtime Photoshoots Amongst Nature

I always look forward to the onset of springtime when the birds start singing just that little bit louder, a reminder that warmer weather and longer days are just around the corner!

This signal means I can start planning a small number of family photoshoots in local woodlands and private gardens whilst the bluebells are in flower during April and May time. Not forgetting the stunning rapeseed fields and meadows are awash with vibrant colour too, providing nature’s very own backdrop – perfect for body, mind, and spirit!

Did you know bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) are native to western Europe and well established in Britain and are an indicator of an ancient woodland?

The bluebell is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981). This means digging up the plant or bulb in the countryside is prohibited and picking them could land you with a hefty fine!

Whilst photographing small groups of people and dogs in woodlands and gardens we always stay on the many pathways or fallen trees so we don’t trample on or disturb the plants. Photographing at a low angle highlights the abundance of bluebells and their colour too – it’s all to do with perspective and composition.

The bluebell flowers attract bees, providing an important source of nectar, being among the first flowering plants. Ancient woodlands have a distinctive flora and ecology, having been established for hundreds of years. They are not always blue or violet, but their flowers can sometimes appear as white or pink. Their scent is at its most pungent at dawn and dusk and their hue changes tone with the morning and afternoon sun.

Please get in touch to book your photoshoot. These are limited due to capturing the best light of the day and when the bluebells are at their best which is a small window of opportunity. This link to the PEOPLE page of the website tells you more.

I also offer one-to-one photography masterclasses in the woodlands whilst the bluebells are in flower to understand your camera better.

Thanks Stella

Community and Connection - Then and Now

How times have changed in so many ways…

Today, 10th February, marks 26 years since I opened the doors to my shiny new portrait studio on Station Road East, Oxted– SMS Creative Photography – on 10th February 1997.

A lot has happened and changed since then! Notably, the introduction of digital photography which completely changed the way I worked from 2001onwards! And since August 2019 the studio is no longer on the high street, having made the decision to work remotely nearby. SMS Creative Photography is now called Stella  – Premium Photography, Beautifully Presented.

Before 2001 it was a roll of film loaded in my 35mm Nikon with just 36 exposures. It would take a week or so to get the film back from processing. Black and white printing was very popular back then, especially when photographing babies & children. I used to offer a four part photo-shoot called ‘Baby Steps’ where I photographed babies at 3, 6 and 9 months and on their first birthday. This was very successful and most of these babies are fully-fledged adults now.

The one constant throughout my 26 years in Oxted is my amazing customers who without I would no longer be in business doing what I love – thank you very much!

This brings me to a collaborative project I am taking part in – organised by the female part of the Association of Photographers – the F22 group. The project is called COMMUNITY and CONNECTION  – for each member taking part to interpret the brief as we wish.

For me it was obvious to call back a handful of babies from the early days to photograph them holding their baby photos I took to show the passing of time. To me, this symbolises Community and Connection and how important printed photographs are.

It’s a curated online exhibition to celebrate International Women’s Day on March the 8th 2023. With the possibility of physical exhibitions, artists’ talks discussing their approach to the brief and future collaborations are in store.

I’d like to share with you the photographs I took. It was so lovely to reconnect with the families and to hear what they are up to. They all said they enjoyed taking part in the project and were proud to hold up how they once looked and to be photographed by me.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have a project in mind – 0777 181 0105, be great to hear from you.

Thanks Stella

Collaboration with Casmin Group - Luxury Bespoke Automotive Manufacturing

Barnett, Nick and Ian from Casmin Group

During this week I have been working with Ian Smith, Nick Campolucci and Barnett Fletcher creating images for the launch of their new business and website Casmin Group. Enabling luxury and bespoke manufacturing of automobiles and motorbikes to be matched with discerning clients, giving a personal service from start to finish.

This collaboration stems from our mutual passion for beautiful cars and motorcycles. It’s exciting times as I get to be in the front seat to witness the manufacture of bespoke one-off vehicles, visually capturing the process from concept to manufacture to delivery – to create provenance within tailor-made coffee table books.

Ian said “this is an excellent addition to our portfolio of luxury lifestyle services that we offer our customers. Stella’s service helps us deliver a tailored and personal service from start to finish. Choosing and managing the purchase of a customer’s next vehicle is only the beginning of what we believe should be a long and rewarding relationship. Over the years we have been very impressed with the quality of Stella’s work and believe this is a perfect fit with the services and philosophy available at Casmin Group.”

1966 Jaguar Series 1 E Type Fixed Head Coupe

It was a cold January morning on the Thames but that didn’t deter us from a photoshoot of the three founders together with a stunning 1966 Jaguar Series 1 E Type Fixed Head Coupe that has been in Ian’s family since new – a perfect addition to the shoot! Thanks to the duck’s geese and swans for arriving right on cue!

You can find out more about Casmin Group here as they begin their launch.
