The beauty of nature at autumn time.
There’s a definite shift in the air, isn't there? The late summer sun has softened, trading its intense heat for a warm, golden glow. The frantic energy of summer holidays gives way to the quieter, more reflective rhythm of autumn. For me, September always feels like a gentle exhale; a time for new routines, cosy jumpers, and taking stock.
It's also a month that makes me think about time.
Just yesterday, it feels, we were anticipating summer. Now, we're packing away sandals and watching as the leaves begin to blush with colour. We see it most clearly in our children and grandchildren —the new school year uniform that's a little too big, the gap-toothed smile that's suddenly filled in, the way they've shot up since this time last year. Or the anticipation of leaving home to start university.
Life moves forward, relentlessly. The days can feel long, but the years are astonishingly short. We live through millions of tiny, ordinary moments that, when woven together, create the extraordinary tapestry of our lives. The problem is, memory is fleeting. We can’t possibly hold onto every detail.
We forget the exact way your toddler's curls bounced when they ran. We forget the look of pure concentration on your child's face as they learned to tie their shoes. We forget the spontaneous, all-encompassing hug in the middle of a messy kitchen.
This is why we document our lives.
Photography isn't about creating a perfect, polished version of reality. It's not about everyone smiling perfectly at the camera. It’s about creating a tangible piece of your history. It’s about freezing a moment, a feeling, an interaction, so that you can return to it years from now and say, "Oh, I remember that. That was us. That was such a special moment."
It's a gift to your future self—a way to revisit the chapters you’re living right now, long after the page has been turned.
